Nobody signs a contract expecting their web agency to vanish. But it happens often enough in this industry that there's a fairly predictable pattern behind it — and most of the warning signs are visible before you ever sign, if you know what to look for.
If a proposal covers design and development but is silent on what happens after launch — no support retainer, no patching schedule, no clear point of contact — that's often because there's no real plan for the relationship to continue past the invoice.
A quote that undercuts every competitor by a wide margin is often a sign of thin margins and high team turnover — sustainable businesses price to survive downturns, not just to win the next bid.
A single freelancer with no team behind them can build a perfectly good site — but if they get sick, change careers, or simply get busy with other clients, there's no one else who knows your system well enough to step in.
A few more worth checking directly: ask how long the company has been operating, and ask for references from clients who've been with them for several years, not just recent launches — a portfolio full of six-month-old projects with no long-term relationships is itself a signal. Ask, plainly, who owns the domain, the hosting account and the code once the project ends. A vague or evasive answer to that question is one of the clearest red flags there is.
None of this guarantees longevity — plenty of small, young studios do fine, and plenty of established names still cut corners. But a business that's weathered more than one recession, that offers maintenance as a standard part of the relationship rather than an upsell, and that gives you a straight answer about ownership, is making a much safer bet than one that can't.
We've been operating since 2001, through downturns that closed studios twice our size, and every client relationship still runs through the same team that started it — that's not an accident, it's the model.
